When you can wallpaper the ceiling, and when - no
Wallpapering on the ceiling is used instead of traditional whitewashing or painting. Using this finishing method, the following results are achieved:
- mask minor defects of floor slabs;
- fit the ceiling space into the overall design of the room, using various textures and wallpaper patterns;
- save on expensive work on leveling and painting the surface.
In what cases can I glue the ceiling?
Wallpaper can be glued on any base:
- wooden;
- from drywall;
- concrete;
- OSB;
- from plywood.
The material does not cause allergic reactions, so wallpaper can be pasted both in the living room, and in the nursery or bedroom.
When can’t you use wallpaper?
In the following cases, it is not recommended to use wallpaper as a topcoat on the ceiling:
- In "Khrushchev" with narrow overlapping panels, this finishing method should not be used. Rough joints of panels are difficult to bring into a single plane. The alignment costs are comparable to the costs of installing tensioning systems;
- A humid environment is not suitable for wallpaper, and therefore you will have to use other materials in the bathroom or kitchen;
- In rooms less than 9 m2 it is better to abandon pasting the ceiling. The texture and shades of the wallpaper visually work to reduce the already tiny space. In such areas, ceilings need to be painted or whitened.
What wallpaper is better to use for pasting the ceiling
To cope with the decoration yourself, you first need to decide which wallpaper to choose for the ceiling. When choosing, you should consider the recommendations:
- the density of the wallpaper for the ceiling should not exceed 110 g / m2. If after gluing the wallpaper they are planned to be painted, then the recommended density is 150 g / m2;
- thinner wallpapers should be chosen for the ceiling. Light but thick trellis will absorb a larger amount of adhesive, soak, resulting in the risk of damage to them when working at height;
- it is better to pick up narrow trellises. Cloths of a meter wide are difficult to stick on. The optimal size is 600 mm;
- European manufacturers do not produce special wallpapers for the ceiling, so you have to be content with domestic designs;
- monophonic trellises for a ceiling are chosen, without bright drawings;
- if the work is done alone, buy only non-woven wallpaper. The peculiarity of this material is that the adhesive composition is not applied to the trellises, but immediately applied to the surface impregnated with glue.
For pasting the ceiling using the following types of wallpaper:
- Paper. Thin material cannot hide all flaws and surface irregularities. Only two people will be able to work with paper products - one person cannot cope. Service life - no more than five years. The advantage of paper wallpaper is low cost.
- Non-woven. Multilayer durable embossed trellis. In most cases, they are intended for post-treatment with paint. At a cost higher than paper, but perfectly mask small roughnesses of the base and are suitable for pasting the ceiling alone.
- Vinyl. Also refer to affordable materials. Thick vinyl trellis hides bumps well.
- Textile. This wallpaper is produced by applying silk, linen or viscose fabric to a base of paper or non-woven. The most expensive, high-quality and beautiful material for pasting ceiling tiles.
Necessary materials and tools
Before you glue the wallpaper on the ceiling, you should purchase materials and choose the necessary tool.
The following materials will be required:
- Wallpaper suitable for gluing on the base;
- a primer;
- glue for fixing trellis to the base;
- lining tape (to strengthen the seams between the individual trellises).
To glue the surface with your own hands, you will need the following tools:
- construction goats or stepladder;
- capacity for the preparation of the adhesive;
- electric drill with a nozzle for stirring the adhesive composition;
- yardstick;
- cord to beat the line;
- construction knife;
- glue cuvette;
- roller;
- brush width 150 mm;
- pressure rubber roller;
- spatula with a blade width of at least 300 mm;
- rag or napkin.
Preparatory work
Before you paste the wallpaper on the ceiling, prepare the base and material for work.
Preparation should begin with the processing of the base.
Surface preparation
Concrete base
When preparing concrete surfaces for gluing, the base is cleaned from the previous coating (paint, whitewash, wallpaper). Next, you need to remove the remnants of dust, dirt. Solvents remove greasy stains.
If cracks, chips, potholes are found on the plate, they are sealed with putty.
If serious differences in height are detected at the joints of the floor slabs, gluing should not be performed. In this case, it would be wiser to install suspended or suspended ceilings.
After cleaning and leveling the surface, the base is primed with concrete.
Drywall base
Plasterboard sheets are an excellent basis for gluing, but in order to obtain a high-quality coating, you need to perform the following preparatory work:
- the hats of the screws and the joints of the individual sheets are sealed with putty. The seams are additionally glued with a serpentine;
- the entire surface of the ceiling is putty. If necessary, the dried putty is sanded with sandpaper until a smooth and smooth surface is obtained;
- so that the wallpaper on the ceiling of drywall lay down tightly, the surface is treated with a primer. The primer allows you to align small irregularities and provides high adhesion of the base and trellis.
OSB and plywood bases
Ceilings made of plywood or OSB can be found in country houses. To prepare such a base for gluing, it is puttyed, aligning the joints, treated with a primer.
Markup
The question of how to properly paste wallpaper on the ceiling raises many doubts: where to start moving, how to correctly position the trellis in relation to the window? To resolve these dilemmas, it is recommended that you mark up first.
Layout is a line that indicates the border of the sticker on the first sheet. Focusing on correctly made markings, the initial trellis is glued, and subsequent sheets are already joined to it.
The markings on the ceiling are most conveniently done using a chop cord. The ends of the cord are applied to pre-marked points, pulled and released. A trace will remain on the ceiling, which will be the border of the sticker on the first sheet.
Traditionally, pasting starts from the wall, placing the trellis perpendicular to the window. The border is marked in such a way that you can have 10-15 mm of wallpaper on an adjacent wall.
There is another way to stick the first strip. In this case, the markup is performed from the middle. Find the central point and set aside a distance equal to half the width of the trellis from both sides. Two lines are beaten off with a cord and oriented along them, sticking the first trellis. Subsequent sheets lead from the center to the walls.
Glue preparation
For each type of wallpaper you need to choose the right glue. The purpose of the adhesive mixture and the method of its preparation are printed on the packaging, but there are standard methods for the proper dilution of glue:
- water is poured into the container;
- with the help of a drill with a nozzle, the water is stirred;
- while the water rotates in a container, powder is poured into it;
- the mixture is thoroughly stirred and allowed to stand for 10-15 minutes, after which it is mixed again. The glue is ready.
Cutting trellis to size
When marking the tapestries, it is recommended to leave an overlap of 30-50 mm in order to prevent errors. Excesses are removed with a clerical knife, using a wide spatula as a guide base.
Step-by-step instructions for pasting
Now you should figure out how to wallpaper the ceiling. Pasting can be done alone, but faster to do this work together.
Perform the following actions:
- The glue is applied to the trellis and the base (in the case of non-woven wallpaper, only on the wallpaper).
- The finished sheet is folded in half and held for 3-5 minutes so that it is well saturated with the adhesive.
- According to the marking, the first trellis is glued, taking into account the overlap on the wall of 30-50 mm. The sheet is smoothed with a rag and rolled with a rubber roller.
- The excess in the corners is cut off until the wallpaper is completely dry.
- The next trellis is aligned along the edge of the first. When attaching subsequent sheets, you need to carefully adjust the joints and roll them with a rubber roller.
You should not pay attention to small wrinkles, they will straighten out when the wallpaper dries.
Private issues and subtleties of the work
Pasting the ceiling is different from pasting the walls and in order to perform this job perfectly, you need to understand some of the intricacies of this process:
Angles. To properly paste the junction of the ceiling plate and walls, you need to perform the following steps:
- the edge of the trellis lead to the wall;
- in the place of contact of the walls outline the cut line with a pencil;
- the sheet is cut according to the mark;
- the edges overlap one another so that the angle is closed. Surplus cut off.
Pipes. Tapestry is glued on the ceiling plate to the point of contact with the pipe. Perpendicular to the pipe make a cut from the edge of the wall to the point of contact with the pipe. A circle is cut out in the trellis, with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the pipe, and the sheet is completely glued. Excess wallpaper carefully cut.
Joints So that the places of contact between the trellises are not striking, the sheets are placed perpendicular to the windows. Thus, the joints will be located along the line of light. To get a completely homogeneous surface of the ceiling without joints, the wallpaper is painted with filler joints.
