Why doesn't the washing machine motor work? There may be several reasons - it depends on the type and structure of the electric motor. If you encounter a similar situation at home, before calling the wizard, you can conduct an independent diagnosis.
How to get to the motor and fix the breakdown, read the article.
Types of engines and the reasons for their breakdown
Three types of motors are used in washing machines. It:
- Asynchronous. It was used in old-style washers.
- Collector. It is installed in all washing machines.
- Invertor. It is used only in the most modern models.
The inverter or direct-drive electric motor is the most difficult to check - due to the features of the assembly. A system with such a drive is equipped with a self-diagnosis, which, if the motor fails, will display an error code on the display. If this does not happen, then you can inspect the device yourself.
The structure of asynchronous and commutator motors is similar. To check them, you will also need to disassemble the SM and pull out the motor. In collector problems most often arise:
- With brushes. Soft graphite material erases over time, especially if you often overloaded the machine.
- With lamellas. Due to a short circuit or overvoltage, the lamellas on the collector are peeled off.
- With windings. In the windings of the stator and rotor, an interturn circuit or open circuit could occur.
Therefore, if the engine on your machine does not turn on, proceed with disassembly and inspection.
Do it yourself
Let's start with the disassembly of the AGR and the removal of the motor from the housing.
Inverter type
Direct-drive motors can be found on the CMA LG and Samsung models.
You can independently remove the inverter motor for inspection, but you can’t repair it yourself if it is faulty.
- After disconnecting the machine from the power, unscrew all the bolts around the perimeter of the rear panel.
- To remove the motor rotor, remove the screws that secure the motor wiring.
- While holding the rotor stationary, unscrew the central bolt.
- After removing the rotor assembly, unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the stator assembly.
- After removing the stator, disconnect its wiring.
On examination, did you find burnt parts? Contact the service center. If you need to replace the motor winding, it will be easier to buy a new one.
Collector type
This type is used in washing machines of the Indesit, Kandy, Samsung, Ariston, Veko, and Electrolux brands.
To check the collector engine of the washer, you need to get to it:
- Removing the rear panel, under the tank you will find the engine.
- Remember or photograph the location of the wiring and disconnect it from the motor.
- Remove the mounting bolts, remove the motor from the housing.
Brushes
The brushes rub against the rotor, so they wear out. Then contact is lost and the motor circuit breaks. In this case, the motor begins to lose power, run jerkily, then start, then stop.
If you notice sparking when connecting the motor to the mains, this may indicate problems with brushes or slats. We described the methods for checking the engine in previous articles.
- On the sides of the case you will find protruding elements - brushes.
- Unscrew their fastener and pull it out of the housing.
- If they are worn out, replace in the reverse order.
Even if one brush is worn more than the other, both parts must be changed. Otherwise, this will lead to uneven effects on the rotor and problems in operation.
Lamels
During prolonged use, the brushes are wiped in the lamellas of the collector of the cavity. Also, the lamella can peel off, because the rotor is locked or jammed. You can understand this during a visual inspection. If burrs or bumps are observed, the anchor is removed and mounted on a lathe for grooving.
The gaps between the lamellae are cleaned. To check them, ring the gaps with an Ohmmeter. If the device shows a short circuit, it means that you need to clean more.
You can determine the failure of the lamellas by rotating the rotor. A loud noise indicates a breakdown.
Bearings
Deterioration of the motor bearings leads to friction between the stator and the rotor. Inspect the rotor: if it begins to wear out, it must be replaced with the bearings. When scrolling, the rotor will rotate unevenly, making scratching sounds.
To remove the bearing from the motor, you will need a special puller. Choose it depending on the size of the bearing. When installing the puller, focus on the inner ring.
To fit the bearing on the shaft, you can heat it with a blowtorch. After cooling, it will clearly sit in place.
Winding
When the stator and rotor windings are shorted or broken, the motor loses power, buzzes, but does not turn. If the motor overheats and the thermostat trips, the washing machine will not work, the washing will not start.
Checking the windings is carried out with a multimeter - ring wiring and lamellas. It is impossible to reinstall the winding in case of a malfunction with your own hands. Therefore, it is easier to replace the SM engine.
Now you know what to check if the engine does not start. Operate the machine according to the instructions, then all its parts will last much longer.
